A Little Slice of Italy: Pizzana

Pizzana, is the creation of Candace and Charles Nelson of Sprinkles Cupcakes and partners Chris and Caroline O’Donnell…and of course the magical pizza making skills of chef Daniele Uditi.

I met Candace when she first launched Sprinkles Cupcakes, and I featured her story on my segment Lisa’s LA on FOX. Over the years she would come in for cupcakes segments and one year even showed my daughter Elsie and me how to make these cute Holiday Cupcakes!

Candace puts 110% in everything she does, from being a mother, to a pastry chef, to a wife and entrepreneur. She teaches you how to approach baking, cooking and life in general in such a fun way — afterall, she is known for the cutest most delicious dessert in the world, the cupcake. Every household should own her book, The Sprinkles Baking Book: 100 Secret Recipes from Candace’s Kitchen.

The idea to turn her attention to pizza started after having a pizza night with Chef Daniele Uditi, at actor, Chris O’Donnell house. They decided to create a gem of a neighborhood restaurant in Brentwood that transports you to a small Italian village.  The food is beyond authentic with many items grown and flown in from a special place in Italy, just for Pizzana.

I sat down with Candace and enjoyed a smorgasbord of food — it is a great place to order family style. We started out with the Carciofi Arrostiti, which is a charred artichoke salad topped with pine nuts and Parmesan. It’s officially my go-to every time I visit!

Their brussel sprouts salad, Cavoletto di Bruxelles, is so refreshing, topped with apples, pistachios and a caramelized shallot vinaigrette, that I wish I could bottle up and take home with me!

Then it was time for the stars of the show to come out.

There’s a reason why “Los Angeles Times” food critic Jonathan Gold calls Pizzana’s Pizzas “among the best in the world”.

They have a little something for everyone here: The Corbarina Pizza is topped with creamy burrata and fresh and delicate squash blossoms.

There’s even a vegan pizza, The Ortolana is topped with grilled zucchini, eggplant, red pepper pesto (YUM!) and fresh basil. I’m not vegan, but I’d sure eat this any day! They can also make any pizza with a gluten free crust – WIN!

Their menu changes with the seasons to be able to offer the freshest produce and ingredients that they can find. This past Fall, they had a Zucca ‘Nduja Pizza, which is a pumpkin pizza – need I say more?

I am always in awe of this incredible woman, who has balanced a successful business, marriage and motherhood. When I walk into the restaurant, I immediately feel her presence. She has such a caring and light soul and you can feel that good energy in this darling treat of a little place.

Speaking of treats, make sure to leave room for sweets as their dessert line up is to die for. For goodness sake, afterall, this woman kicked the cupcake craze into high gear! Their Fall dessert special is a decadent Pumpkin Spice Pudding, that has all the flavors of Fall!

We also enjoyed the Apple Upside Down Cake with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream. Honestly, this meal couldn’t have been any better.

This isn’t the first story I’ve done on this incredible woman, and I am pretty sure it won’t be the last. I can’t wait to see what Candace has planned for us next.
