I’m a true foodie at heart. And now that I don’t have to wake up at 2:30 a.m. for work I can explore more of the newest and hottest spots in Los Angeles.
My favorite new cafe for a bunch of reasons is Great White, in Venice.
This cafe blends cool California vibes with the beachy vibes of Australia. Proprietors of Great White, Sam Trude and Sam Cooper, actually come from Sydney, Australia and they like to say “sandy feet are always welcome”. The open air space is located just steps from the beach and right across from the iconic Venice sign, so you know it’s got a hip vibe. I stopped by on a gorgeous sunny day and sat with Chef Alex Thomopoulos who is not only talented in the kitchen, she’s super funny, super gorgeous and super tall…somewhere around 6’.
I’ve known her since she was a teenager. Her mom is Television Personality and Cookbook author Cristina Ferrare. Cristina and I often did Thanksgiving cooking segments together on “Good Day LA” and Alex would tag along over the years.
The menu she created along with fellow chef Cassy Pugh offers breakfast and lunch items served all day (Don’t worry dinner and booze are on the horizon).
Of course, I had to try a little bit of everything! The Matcha Latte and Golden Turmeric Latte were a huge hit, both beautiful, refreshing and good for you!
The attention to detail is remarkable, from the presentation of the food to the dishware it’s served in. The Blue Smoothie Bowl is by far the most gorgeous item on their menu and it’s served in a coconut shell bowl (super Instagram-worthy!). But while you’re posting away don’t forget Blue Algae also happens to be a superfood, it’s one of the highest nutrient-dense foods on the planet! Plus the housemade granola is vegan and gluten-free!
Their Smashed Pea Bowl, topped with burrata and prosciutto is what brunch dreams are made of. Drizzled with a little of their homemade Chili Oil on top for some kick! It’s insane.
While Alex crafted a menu that is really healthy and earthy, always using the best ingredients, she also offers some crowd pleasers like the Breakfast Burrito and the Fried Chicken Sandwich, which she calls her “decadent dish.” Known for her Youtube cooking show and clean eating recipes, Alex says she never thought she’d become known for a breakfast burrito — but it truly is THAT amazing, the tater tots stuffed inside don’t hurt! She made 150 of them on opening day!
With ample seating inside and outside, it’s a great place for a morning coffee, a quick bite for lunch or catch up with the girls. The bright and airy decor and ocean breeze brings that laid-back vibe full circle. So if you’re in the area, or in need of a snack after hitting up the beach, head to Great White, sandy feet and all.
